“It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices.
” (Mt 12:29)
Why this change? In the books of law/the Pentateuch
we find the people of God are most of the time around the altar of God
offerings different types of sacrifices. In the very beginning of the salvation
history we find the sacrifice of Abel was accepted and Cain’s rejected. God
asks Cain why he did not offer Him a genuine/proper sacrifice. Yes, “If you do
well, will not be accepted?” (Gen 4:7) We
see the book of Leviticus, where the different laws and regulations are
mentioned as to offer good sacrifice, is at the very center of the Pentateuch.
It shows how important were sacrifices and religious offerings in their life. However,
in today’s gospel passage we hear God rejecting the offerings and sacrifices. The
background is very clear Jewish leaders questioning the actions of Jesus’
disciples on a Sabbath day and Jesus is answering them. There is a critical
remark on the Jewish leaders from the part of Jesus. What was that remark? They
failed to address properly the needs, difficulties and problems of the people.
Today we are also asked the same question. If we are not able to address them
properly in our life situations we also be criticized and judged by him. Lord,
help me to discern what is more divine and human.
Take courage God is with you! Have
a nice and blissful day….
