“Where did this man get this wisdom
and these mighty works?” (Mt 13:57)
This question of Jews may be taken
as either amazement or contempt. However, since it is a question among
themselves against Jesus and the tone of the proceeding sentences, surely it
gives the impression that it is not out of wonder and astonishment they asked
this question. Because, what we find here is that they are purposely connecting
him to the illiterate, poor parents and relatives. We know that people are sometimes
tempted to make such connections either for good or evil. Sometimes people are very
proud of their relations; sometimes they are very silent about their relations.
You may feel this very often from youngsters’ dealings. Jesus was anyway proud
of his humble parents. Now the question is, where does this contempt come from?
I think it is either from their pride or their familiarity. Both are to be
taken with care. It spoils respect for others that results in blocks of
blessings. Because of their disrespect and disbelief Jesus could not perform
anymore miracles for them.
Lord Jesus, we pray today with
humble heart that we may be always free from pride, hatred and contempt toward
others and be gifted with love and respect for others and their opinions. Amen.
Take courage God is with you!
Have a nice and blissful day….
